If you think we're two crazy people, you're only partially right. We're not web designers either, so if this site is a little primitive, you know why. This is the first attempt for either of us to do a web page, and it's been an interesting and frustrating process. We'll see how well it works.
Travis is 32 and an electrical engineer (industrial power systems) in Houston, TX. He's the owner of the car. He's extremely tired of working on it too. After picking Dean up from the airport, he's wondering if they'll both survive this trip. He's neither married nor has any kids, although there are a lot of people who are trying to resolve this problem. Travis doesn't exactly know what his unofficial role in this trip is, but it is probably to keep Dean on track and make sure that he gets home in time for Easter. And just to set the record straight (see Dean's bio below), he has not overplanned this trip to death. He's just detail oriented. Yea…that's it.
Dean is an electrical engineer in Wichita, KS and doesn't even know what an industrial power system is. At age 30, he's much younger than Travis and has lots of cars too, but none that he will work on. Dean has been married to Lori for almost 9 years and they have two boys, Trevor age 2, and Braden age 2 months. He's not sure if Lori is glad to get him out of the house or mad that he is doing this, either way he's on the trip and making the best of it. He's along because Travis is much too structured to ever attempt a trip like this without overplanning it to death, anyone that knows Dean knows that structure really isn't his strong point and taking off without a plan is one of his specialties. Dean is also the unofficial navigator for the trip, so anyone taking part in the contest in the number of times getting lost category can slip him some extra cash and he can make it happen. Dean also really likes to drive, but Travis has informed him that there will be no speeding or dirt roads on this expedition, so his driving time may be limited. We'll keep you updated.
What Are We Doing?
The whole idea started over a year ago. We were talking about how cool it would be to drive part of Route 66. The car wasn't exactly in good shape back then. It was okay, but it had some definite problems. At the beginning of 1999, the car went through a transformation…new engine, rebuilt transmission, and just about every new mechanical device on it. Last summer the car hadn't really been proven out. This year, it appears to be ready, or so we hope. The heater now works, and A/C will be provided by 4 roll-down windows, 2 wing windows, and a convertible top.
We only have a week of vacation to do this. The trip is starting out from Houston, and the goal is to get to the Grand Canyon by as much of the original Route 66 as possible. We're catching the first part of Route 66 at Amarillo.
Perhaps we should tell you about our proposed route. Houston…Amarillo…Albuquerque…Santa Fe…Flagstaff (the end of our Route 66 drive)…Grand Canyon…Phoenix…Tuscon…El Paso…Big Bend State Park…San Antonio…and finally back to Houston. We don't have any plans other than just to hit what we can of Route 66, see the Grand Canyon, and have some fun. That's about it.
This is what we are taking the road-trip in. It's Travis' 1967 Firebird convertible.

Send us some E-mail and ask to get on our mailing list. As we travel along, we will update this site and send everyone a quick update on the trip.. (If we haven't killed each other). Give us some feedback. We'd like to hear from you.

Travis' Contest (Dean thinks it's corny, but Travis is doing it anyway)
Sorry - Contest Closed on 4/18 - you snooze - you loose
Question #1 - Total miles driven from start to finish?
Question #2 - What was the cheapest motel price we paid?
Bonus Question - How many times do we get lost?
E-mail us with your answers, and if you guessed the closest, you'll get a cool Route66 souvenir mailed back to you at the end of the trip.
Dean flew to Houston on Friday April 14 with very little incident.
We're leaving Houston on April 15.
Dean has to return to Wichita on April 21, so this is a fairly short trip.
